Duffel or weekender: which short-trip bag to buy

Both are soft, both carry for a couple of nights. The differences are structure, strap design and how they behave in the overhead bin.

The terms overlap, but in practice a duffel is a soft, cylindrical or boxy bag built to haul gear, and a weekender is a smaller, more structured bag built for short trips with a nicer look.

Do they fit as carry-ons?

Soft duffels can compress into a sizer, but their final dimensions depend on how full they are. A 40-litre duffel packed tight can be larger than a rigid 40-litre carry-on. Measure it packed (see how to measure a carry-on bag the way an airline does), and note that duffels above about 45 litres are rarely carry-on friendly.

Choosing between them

  • For outdoor, weather-exposed travel, choose a duffel with water-resistant fabric.
  • For city weekends and business-casual trips, choose a weekender.
  • If you want to carry hands-free, look for backpack straps.

Frequently asked questions

Can a duffel be a carry-on?

A smaller duffel can, if its packed size meets the airline’s limit. Measure it fully packed.

What size duffel for a weekend?

Roughly 35–50 litres suits most weekend trips, depending on how you pack.

Are duffels waterproof?

Some are water-resistant, few are fully waterproof. Check the listing.
