Before you fly

A final cabin-bag check for the details that are easiest to miss at home and most awkward to fix at the airport.

Confirm what your fare includes

  1. Open your booking and confirm whether it includes a carry-on, a personal item, or both.
  2. Note the current size and weight limit for each item. Fare type, route and aircraft can affect the allowance.
  3. If two flights in the same trip have different limits, pack to the smaller allowance.

Our airline rule summaries are useful for planning, but the allowance shown in your current booking takes priority.

Measure the bag as you will carry it

  • Pack the bag first, then measure its height, width and depth.
  • Include wheels, handles, feet and bulging exterior pockets.
  • Keep expansion zips closed if the expanded size exceeds your limit.
  • Weigh the complete bag, not the empty shell.

Enter your packed measurements in the Bag Finder for a quick side-by-side check.

Organize the cabin essentials

  • Keep travel documents, medication and valuables where you can reach them without unpacking the bag.
  • Separate liquids and electronics so they are easy to present if screening staff ask.
  • Protect spare batteries from short circuits and keep battery-powered travel gear accessible.
  • Leave a little space for items you may need to move from a coat pocket or personal item.

Do the last-door check

  • Booking and identification are accessible.
  • The packed bag is within the smallest limit on the itinerary.
  • Nothing essential is in a bag that may be checked at the gate.
  • You have reviewed the current instructions for your airline and departure airport.
