Neither type is better in every situation. The right choice depends on how you pack, which airlines you fly and how you treat luggage.
At a glance
| Factor | Hardside | Softside |
|---|---|---|
| Protection | Rigid shell shields contents from impact and rain | Fabric absorbs bumps but gives less crush protection |
| Fitting a sizer | Fixed size; cannot compress | Squeezable, helpful at tight sizers |
| Packing | Two clamshell halves; needs room to open | Zipped pockets and a flexible volume |
| Surface wear | Scratches show, especially on glossy finishes | Fabric can stain or fray over time |
| Weight | Varies widely; thick shells are heavier | Often lighter at the same size |
Why choose hardside
A hard shell shields fragile items and keeps contents dry. It also stands up on its own, which makes it easy to open on a hotel floor. The downside is that it does not flex: if it is a few millimetres over the airline’s limit, it stays over. Hardside spinners also tend to be thicker once wheels are included.
Why choose softside
A softside can slip into a tight sizer if you pack it sensibly, and exterior pockets give you quick access to documents and chargers. It is also forgiving of overstuffing, though overstuffing is the main cause of oversize carry-ons. Fabrics vary: look for abrasion-resistant materials and sturdy zips.

How to decide
- If you fly WestJet or budget carriers with tight sizers, lean softside.
- If you carry fragile items or want rain protection, lean hardside.
- If you check your bag as often as you carry it on, a hardside will protect better in the hold.
- If you want the lightest possible bag, compare listed weights; do not assume either type is lighter.

Frequently asked questions
Are hardside suitcases more durable?
They resist crushing and water better, but they can crack under severe impact and show scratches. Softside luggage tends to hide wear but can tear or fray. Neither is universally more durable.
Which is lighter?
It depends on the specific model. Compare listed weights rather than relying on the type.
Do spinner wheels make a bag oversize?
They add height, so yes, they can. Measure the whole bag.
