A week in a carry-on is more about planning than cramming. This method works for either a suitcase or a pack.
1. Plan around outfits, not days
Choose a palette of two or three neutral colours plus one accent, so everything mixes. Decide how many outfits you need, then add one extra bottom layer. Laundry on a week-long trip is a normal part of one-bag travel; see the laundry items in Laundry & clean.
2. A sample week
| Item | Quantity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tops | 4–5 | Mix short and long sleeves |
| Bottoms | 2–3 | Wear the bulkiest on the plane |
| Underwear and socks | 5–6 | Wash mid-trip |
| Layer (sweater or light jacket) | 1–2 | Wear or carry on the plane |
| Shoes | 2 pairs | Wear one, pack one |
| Sleepwear | 1 | Double as lounge wear |
An example plan, not a rule. Adjust to climate and activity.
3. Layout
- Heavy items near the wheels and back. In a suitcase, shoes and toiletries go near the wheel end so the bag does not tip. In a pack, keep weight close to your back.
- Fill the gaps. Socks and small items fill shoes and corners.
- Roll soft items, fold structured ones. Rolled tees save space; folded shirts stay smoother.
- Keep a flat layer on top for items you need at security, such as a jacket and tech pouch.
4. Liquids and toiletries
Pack liquids in a clear bag within the rules; see liquids and toiletries in your carry-on (Canada). Solid alternatives such as bars and tablets save both space and hassle.
5. The weight check
Weigh the packed bag at home. If it is over the airline’s limit, swap the heaviest items for lighter alternatives or wear them. A pocket luggage scale is a useful tool; see Luggage accessories.
6. Pick a bag to match
| Bag | Size (cm) | Capacity | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 55 × 40 × 23 cm | Not listed | 2.8 kg | |
| 55 × 35 × 23 cm | 40 L | 1.4 kg | |
| 53 × 36 × 23 cm | Not listed | 2.2 kg |
Frequently asked questions
How many days of clothes should I pack?
Pack for roughly four to five days and plan to do laundry or re-wear items on a longer trip.
Should I roll or fold?
Rolling saves space for soft items; folding keeps structured pieces smoother. Many travellers combine both.
What should I wear on the plane?
Your heaviest shoes and your bulkiest layer. That frees space and weight in the bag.
